Resveratrol of Grape– Vitis vinifera

The fruits of Vitis vinifera, or grapevines, have been consumed, fermented and drunk and used medicinally for thousands of years by mankind. It is cultured through the world in carefully pruned and regimented vineyards designed to maximise production of fruit. Originally it romped through warm forests in valleys between the Caucasus Mountains. It uses tendrils which coil and tighten to support it, in the wild on other plants and in cultivation on wires. Its climbing habit allows it to reach the sunlight. It converts the light energy of the sun into chemical energy in the form of the sugars in the fruits. These highly sweet fruits evolved to tempt animals to consume the fruit and disperse the seed. Most grapevine propagation is now carried out vegetatively by taking cuttings to reduce the variability that seed growth can have. However the plant still produces its desirable fruit. There has been some development of seedless grapes but recent scientific advances have highlighted the health giving properties of the seeds. Perhaps not so surprising when we are reminded that a seed contains all that a plant needs to start life.
The most well known use of grapes is in the production of wine. As American vine cuttings were brought back to Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries there were three occasion in which diseased were transmitted to European stocks. One solution was grafting disease resistant American rootstocks to European plants. Another was the accidental discovery that spraying grape must that had fermented on copper sheets onto vines prevented mildew.

Looking at grapes you can see with the naked eye a powdery whitish covering – a fungal bloom on the fruit’s skin. Yet the fruit remains edible. The plant itself contains chemicals which defend it from fungi. Resveratrol is a found in most parts of the grape vine, in particular in the seeds of the fruit. It is produced by plants as a defence against infection by micro-organisms such as fungi. This chemical has recently been scientifically tested and found to reduce incidence of coronary heart disease. Some of the specific properties of Resveratrol are its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. As well as being absorbed through the digestive tract Resveratrol can be absorbed through skin.
