Lavender – Lavendula angustifolia

It is easy to dismiss Lavender as a ubiquitous ingredient that appears in a vast number of cosmetics and perfumes. Undoubtedly a factor in its wide usage is its high production of active components. If you observe Lavender in bloom you will notice the large amount of humming insects around the deep blue or purple flowers. While Lavender is particular about requiring good drainage in cultivation as it is adapted to survive in quite dry conditions, it is troubled by very few pests which initially would seem to be a contradiction to the numerous insects that pollinate its flowers.

The part of Lavender that is most widely used is the essential oil which is extracted by steam distillation of the flower buds. Essential oils are perceived by people as carrying a distinctive smell which is the essence of the plant it is derived from. The evocativeness of the sense of smell contributes to the strength of the connection between a smell and a specific item, or even a set of memories, or sense of place. Lavender essential oil is secreted in modified hairs on the surface of the flowers. The oil is hydrophobic and mainly composed of linalool. There are several related species that are used commercially for Lavender essential oil production. The type used in ACQUIZHEN products is Lavendula angustifolia which yields less oil than other species but the oil it produces is higher quality in terms of its active component.

If you brush against the narrow grey green leaves of lavender plant you will notice a familiar but less sweet lavender smell. The essential oil distilled from the leaves is higher in camphor than that distilled from the flowers. Lavender produces the phytochemicals that constitute essential oil in the leaves and flowers for different functions. The phytochemicals produced in the leaves serve to repel insects and may provide some protection from micro-organisms. The phytochemicals produced in the flower bud attract pollinating insects. The largest amount of linlool is present just before the bud of the flower opens i.e. when the flower is ready for pollination.

Lavender essential oil is included in ACQUIZHEN’s Nurturing Night Cream for three different reasons. The physiological effect of applying Lavender oil to skin is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. Lavender has a great olfactory impact and is an important note in the unique and beguiling aroma of the cream. The psychological effect of Lavender essential oil is to induce a sense of relaxation which is perfect for applying the ACQUIZHEN Nurturing Night Cream which is formulated to soothe and boost skin regeneration while resting.
